| Joni Mitchell wrote: "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot." Too often , it seems, when bohemians transform an ugly place into a cool space, greedy money steps in and destroys the scene. It's happened before. It will happen again. Alas, the Skinny - as we know and love it - is gone. Luckily, we have this CD to remind us of the spectacles and talent who graced the Skinny's stage. This recording is just a sample of the amazing events that transpired in the old Congress Street porn theater. A CD, however, can only jog memories. To truly understand the Skinny, you needed to hear the music enhanced by the club's acoustically solid room. You needed to feel the slope of the floor, slick with beer and sweat. You needed to smell the scent of dancing, pulsating bodies. You needed to experience the excitement of a crowd discovering a new band or embracing a long-time favorite. This place was created by Johnny and Mellow Lomba, a very unique couple, whose dreams and hard work cultivated a community of artists and friends. While the Lombas, in theory, owned the Skinny, the nightclub actually belonged to the bands and the staff and the regulars - a family, almost - who strove to create, perform, take risks and, of course, drink. We know it's people, not a particular building, that made this nightclub special. What we learned from the Skinny, obviously, is that anything is possible. --Chris Barry, February 2003 | |
